Gov. Tim Walz plans to announce his reopening plan for Minnesota, including the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions, on Thursday.
During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Walz said the announcement will go a long way to moving things forward. I think Minnesotans can start assuming they will have a very normal-looking summer, Walz added.
The last time Walz increased capacity restrictions was in March, when he upped capacity limits at bars, restaurants, entertainment venues and gyms, and removed capacity limits for religious services and salons.

Blois Olson says he s expecting the governor to set a date that Minnesota will reopen probably around Memorial Day.
The governor is going to look at a June 1st time frame to try to get the state as open as possible. I don t know the specifics but would imagine there are fewer restrictions on bars and restaurants, there are more opportunities for venues, and many more capacity at sporting events and things like that.
Olson says, with COVID-19 vaccines now widely available, governors across all states are under increasing pressure to open up.

Kathryn and Linda Koutsky are a mother-daughter duo who have been digging into the historical archives of the Minnesota State Fair, publishing a book.
Kathryn Koutsky remembers the last time the state fair was canceled because of a disease.
“I do remember the polio pandemic. I was 8 years old at the time that that fair was canceled, Kathryn Koutsky said. And my parents and I, we always went to the fair, and so that really affected me.
And last year’s modified drive-thru fair looked nothing like what’s seen in the history books.

“The fair is so crowded that you just couldn t imagine going into the crowd. I mean, it was awfully sad, said Kathryn s daughter, Linda. I loved going to the fair. I go several days each year, but you just knew there was no way we could go.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz commented today that if Minnesotan s continue to vaccinate, and the pandemic continues on its current trajectory, the 2021 Minnesota State Fair could be pretty close to normal following its cancellation in 2020 due to COVID-19.
Walz kept his cards close to his vest regarding a planned announcement next week about re-openings and more restriction roll-backs, saying discussions with health officials and business groups are ongoing.

Last year the Great Minnesota Get Together was canceled for only the sixth time in the fair s history. The first five times occurred in 1861 and 1862, 1893, 1945, and again in 1946.
